Notes for James W. Pettit
The 1900 census gives his birthdate as Feb 1847, but he was recorded as age 6 in 1850 and age 17 in 1860, so he was probably really born about 1844, give or take a year.
Notes for Lucy A. Schultz
The Illinois deaths database lists Lucy A. Pettit, age 82, born 10 Nov 1851 in Mt. Sterling, Ky, died 7 Sep 1934 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Illinois, married, wife of James Pettit, father Samuel Schultz born in Holland, mother’s maiden name Angeline Reyborn, born in Kidville, Ky.

Kiddville is a tiny village in Clark Co., Ky, near the Montgomery Co. border, about halfway between Winchester and Mt. Sterling. Lucy’s birthdate may actually be a year or two earlier; the 1870 census listed her as age 21, and the 1900 census listed her as born Oct 1849. Unfortunately, the 1850 and 1860 censuses are not any help in resolving the question, because she does not appear with Samuel and Angeline in either census.

Lucy’s death certificate also says her father was born in Holland, presumably because that was the story she had started telling. In 1920, she reported her father as born in Ireland. But no earlier records suggest any recent immigration. Samuel Shultz even reported in the 1880 census that not only he, but also his parents, were born in Kentucky.
