"Reference Book of Wyoming County History", 1965, by Mary Keller Bowman, pages 480 and 481, containst the profile (in a section on the Tolliver family) "...4. Enoch Tolliver (b. 1855, Ashe County, North Carolina) married (1) Anna Short; (2) Rhoda Bailey; lived near head of Black Fork. He was a merchant, postmaster and Primitive Baptist preacher. He and his second wife were brutally murdered at their home on Dec. 25, 1928 (sic, should be 26 Dec 1927) when he was 87 years old, by a wayward son. Children of the first marriage were Hiram; William; Charles; Crawford; Booker; Lee who died at Camp Mead, Ind., in Oct 1918; Sarah; Rebecca; Minerva; Etta; and Nancy Tolliver..."

The “wayward son” was Wise Bailey, son of Harvey Bailey and Rhoda Cline, and thus a stepson of Enoch. Wise committed suicide one month later by hanging himself in his jail cell.
