The Mt. Stering Advocate of April 16, 1936 ran a front page obituary that reported:

"Death Claims Dr. G. N. Cox.---Veteran Local Physician Dies At Mary Chiles Hospital Following A Short Illness. Autopsy revealed ruptured appendix.  He had been an active practicing Physician in Montgomery Co. for 51 years and had delivered more than 1000 babies.  He was known to practically every man, woman, boy and girl in the area and was 74 years old.  He had a ready wit and dry humor.  He never kept any books and collected his accounts solely on  his patients ability to pay.  He was survived by three daughters, Mrs. Hollis Allen (Alma), St. Petersburg, FL., Mrs. W. B. Ferguson (Kathryn) and Miss Ivatilla Cox of Mt. Sterling, KY., and four sons, J. Morrison Cox of Mt. Sterling, KY., Ben W. Cox of St. Petersburg, FL., A. Russell Cox of Dayton, Ohio and Neale Cox of Mt. Sterling, KY.  Services were held in the Ferguson home with burial in Machpelah Cemetery Mt. Sterling, KY.  He lived with daughter Kathryn and son-in-law William Ferguson when wife was ill until his death.”

His gravestone is a simple block inscribed “Dr. G. N. Cox, 1861 - 1936”.
