Census Notes for Newton G. Upton
1900 census of Warren Co., Ohio, Turtle Creek township, Lebanon village, enumerated 11 June, lists on p. 14B, line 64, as part of household 347/369:
Upton, Newton, 32, b. Sep 1867, Ohio Va Va, married 12 years, prisoner.

The head of household is Lou Hunter, age 53, occupation sheriff, but Hunter’s wife, daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren are also living there, so it is apparently a combination jailhouse and residence. There are only five prisoners, one of them a single 18 year old woman. So it was most likely short-term holding for minor offenses.

I cannot find him in the 1910 census.
Census Notes for Jennie Varvel
1910 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Franklin township, enumerated 30 April, lists on p. 8B as family #191:
Varvel, Harvey, 37, b. Ohio Ky Ky, widowed, tobacco farmer; Jennie, niece, 26, b. Oh Oh Oh, single, mother of 3 children, 3 living; Emma, niece, 10; Edna, niece, 7; Mabel, niece, 5; Vernie, nephew, 10. All children born Oh Oh Oh. Rose A., grandmother, 91, b. Oh Oh Va.

Jennie is the daughter of Harvey’s brother George. The three girles are hers, and thus should properly be listed as great nieces of Harvey. I do not know for sure if they were born out of wedlock, or if they should have another surname. In later years they went by Upton.
Notes for Newton G. & Jennie (Family)
The 1915 city directory for Xenia, Ohio lists Netwon G. Upton, laborer, employer R. A. Kelly Co., residence 107 Bellbrook Ave, wife Jennie. Also at the same address is Emma Upton, with her own listing line, no other details.

The 1927 city directory for Xenia, Ohio, lists at 234 Dayton Ave:
Upton, Newton (wife Jennie), laborer.
Upton, Jennie, clerk for E. H. Schmidt
Upton, Mabel
Upton, Orville, laborer

Note that these two directory listings in Xenia (Greene Co.) bracket the 1920 census where they were in Clinton Co., Ohio.

Newton and Jennie were probably married in 1910, since Jennie is recorded as single in the 1910 census. But that may be a recording error. So I do not know whether Newton is the father of the girls or not. Most likely they have a different father, but since they were raised as Uptons I will link them here until I find more information.
