Notes for Lewis Wagoner
Lewis Wagoner is in my tree because his second wife Rebecca McClanahan was my 2C4R, and his daughter Nancy Jane (born out of wedlock to Nancy Ann Smalley Case) married my 3C3R John Wesley Varvel Jr.

Some of his descendants spell their name Wagner.
Census
1850 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Franklin township, enumerated 23 Sep, lists on p. 16 as family #105:
Lewis Waggoner, 38, farming; Caroline, 36; Leander J., 15; Nancy, 13; John, 11; Isaac, 9; Aaron, 7. All born in Ohio.

1860 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Franklin township, Locust Grove P.O., enumerated 19 July, lists on p. 133 as family #955/935:
Lewis Wagoner, 45, farmer, married within the year; Rebecca J,. 22, married within the year; John, 14, Isaac, 12; Nathaniel A., 9; George A., 6; Lewis P., 4; Martha A., 2. All born in Ohio.

There are very large age discrepancies (7 years) for John and Isaac between this census and the 1850 one. (And possibily for Nathaniel as well, if he is the same as the son listed as Aaron in 1850.)

1870 census of Pulaski Co., Missouri, Big Piney township, Waynesville P.O., enumerated 3 June, records on p. 4 as family #29:
Wagoner, Lewis, 54, farmer, b. Ohio; Sarah, 31, b. Missouri; Isaac, 23; Nathaniel, 19; A. George, 16; P. Lewis, 14; E. Mary, 9; E. Margarett, 5; N. James, 2. Wilson, Fielding, 10; R. William, 8; Elizabeth, 5. All Wagoners born in Ohio, all Wilsons in Missouri.

I doubt all these family members were going by their middle names with a leading initial. The entire page follows the same pattern. Apparently the census taker assumed that “last names first” meant you should also put the first name last with the middle initial before it.
Notes for Nancy Ann Smalley
Her death certificate records Nancy Anne Case, age 81 years 4 months 15 days, born 9 Nov 1829 in Ohio, died 24 Feb 1911 in Meigs township, Adams Co., Ohio, widowed, father James Smalley, mother’s maiden name Abagail Varvel, both born in Ohio, cause of death paralysis and hemoplegia, informant Dr. J. W. McLaughlin, Lawshe, Ohio, burial in Purtee Cemetery.

The maiden name for her mother is incorrect. Her parents’ marriage record as well as the death certificates of three of Nancy Ann’s siblings agree that Abigail’s maiden name was Phillips. Probably the informant knew that she had been living with the John Wesley Varvel family, and misinterpreted the connection.
Census
1870 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Meigs township, Wheat Ridge P.O., enumerated 13 July, lists on p. 23 as family #189:
Case, Nancy A., 42; Thomas W., 22; James E., 19; Albert, 16; John, 14; Ruth E., 12; Margaret, 10; Mary F., 8; Nancy J., 3/12. All born in Ohio.

1880 census of Adams Co., Ohio, Meigs township, enumerated 12 June, lists on p. 9 as family #77/79:
Case, John, 25, farmer, b. Oh Ky Oh; May E, 27, wife, b. Oh Oh Oh; Jentry E., 1, b. May, Oh Oh Oh, son; Nancy A., 52, mother, b. Oh Oh Oh; Albert, 28, son; Josiah T., 22, son; Mary F., 18, dau; Nancy J., 10, dau. Josiah through Nancy born Oh Oh Oh.

The relationships starting with Albert are expressed relative to Nancy, rather than to John as they should be. (Either that or Nancy should be recorded as head of household.)

In 1900 Nancy is listed with her daughter Nancy J. and son-in-law John Wesley Varvel, as Case, Nancy A., mother-in-law, 70, b. Nov 1829, Oh Oh Oh, widowed, mother of 9 children, 5 living.
