Notes for Boone Howard & Mahala (Family)
Rowan Co., Ky marriage book 3, p. 38, records the marriage on 19 Mar 1898 of Boon Brown, age 23, farmer, born in Menifee Co., both parents born in Virginia, to Mahala Jent, age 24, born in Rowan Co., father born in Perry Co., mother born in Wolf Co. Both residents of Wagner. It is recorded as the first marriage for Boon, and the second for Mahala. Marriage performed at Morehead by T. W. Rose, witnesses T. B. Tippett and D. G. Ham, bond surety by John M. Brown.
Census
They were recorded twice in the 1900 census.

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 28 June, lists on p. 22A as family #410:
Brown, Boon, 25, b. Jan 1875, farmer; Mahala, wife, 22, b. Jan 1878, married 2 years, mother of 0 children, 0 living. (The child counts were originally left blank and the 0’s penciled in later.)

The previous household is headed by Boon’s brother John and Mahala’s sister Isabelle.

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Hoggtown precinct, enumerated 25 June, lists on p. 17A as family #286/293:
Brown, Boone, 23, b. 1877, farmer; Mahala, wife, 22, b. Apr 1878, married 2 years, mother of 2 children, 0 living.

Three households below is the family of Mahala’s brother Elias.

In both records, they are both listed as born Ky Ky Ky, although Boone’s parents were really born in Virginia.

1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pine Grove precinct, enumerated 23 May, lists on p. 21A as family #312/375:
Brown, Boone, 37, farmer; Mahala, wife, 34, first marriage for both, married 15 years, mother of 7 children, 1 living; Rose B., dau, 1/12. Coffee, James, 11, servant, farm laborer. Both born Ky Ky Ky.

1920 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pine Grove precinct, enumerated 11 Feb, lists on p. 14A as family #246:
Brown, Boon H, 45, b. Ky Va Ky, farm laborer; Mahala, wife, 42, b. Ky Ky Ky; Rosa B., dau, 9, b. Ky Ky Ky.

1930 census of Langlade Co., Wisconsin, Evergreen township, enumerated 2 April, lists on p. 1B as family #16/17:
Brown, Boone, 55, age at first marriage 20, sawyer at labor camp; Mahala, wife, 52, age at first marriage 17; Fraley, Clester, son-in-law, 22, age at first marriage 22, sawyer at lumber camp; Eva, dau 20; age at first marriage 19; Lear, granddau, 2 6/12. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The daughter named Eva is strange, since Boon and Mahala’s only surviving daughter was named Rosa. There is no birth record for any Fraley child born around 1927 that would fit. The birth index does, however, list a Lee J. McLease born 12 Sep 1927, mother’s maiden name Rosa Brown. Note that the length of marriage numbers suggest that Clester and Eva are newlyweds.
