His obituary in the Dayton Daily News reported:

“JOHNSON, Earl Age 92, of Germantown, Ohio, passed away, Wednesday August 12th, 2009. Earl was born in Yellow Mountain Kentucky, on July 15th 1917, to the late Jesse and Margaret (Conley) Johnson. Earl served in the CCC's from 1936 to 1937 and was a WWII veteran serving in the USAAF until his discharge in 1946. Earl was a member of the Towne Boulevard Church of God in Middletown Ohio. Earl worked for 40 years at Armco Steel Corporation in Middletown Ohio, retiring from the Electric Power Department in 1983. Since 1949, Earl has been active in farming in the Germantown area. Earl loved to travel and he especially enjoyed the trips he made with Pearl to spend the winter in Florida and trips to the Great Smokey Mountains. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years Pearl (Cox) Johnson, two children, Oleta and Merville; a grandson, David Scott Johnson; three brothers, Audie Johnson, Allie Johnson, and Woodrow Johnson; two sisters, Gladys Hamilton and Betty Arapies. He is survived by two sons, Lloyd (Judy) Johnson of Germantown, and Winston Dale (Betty) Johnson of Middletown and his daughter Charlotte Kay Phelps of Germantown; five grandchildren Steve Johnson (Judy), Scott Johnson (Cheri), Tim Phelps (Amy), Angie Richardson (Kirk), and Lori Hall; eight great-grandchildren, Brandalynn Nicole Johnson, Marshall Steven Johnson, Mikah-Jade Johnson, Brandon Scott Johnson, Anthony William Phelps, Michael David Phelps, Sydney Jordan Richardson and Kirk Charles Richardson; a special brother- in-law, Eric Lowell (Amy), of Miamisburg and a special niece, Vickie Wilson of Miamisburg. Friends may call 10:00a.m. - 12 Noon Monday (2 hrs. prior to the Funeral Service), August 17, 2009, at the St. Johns United Church of Christ 201 W. Market St., Germantown, OH, where the Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 (noon), with Pastor Larry Grunden and Pastor Frank Curtis officiating. Burial Germantown Cemetery.”

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Oleta and Merville; a grandson, David Scott Johnson; four brothers, Lloyd David Cox, Howard Flavis Cox, H.B. Cox and infant brother, Wathan Cox; five sisters, Sarah Jane Bray, Grace Tharp, Emma Fugett, Norma Lou Amyx, and infant sister, Zenia Cox. She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Earl Johnson; two sons, Lloyd (Judy) Johnson of Germantown, and Winston Dale (Betty) Johnson of Middletown; her daughter Charlotte Kay Phelps of Germantown; five grandchildren Steve and Scott Johnson, Tim Phelps, Angie Richardson, and Lori Hall; eight great-grandchildren, Brandalynn Niclole Johnson, Marshall Steven Johnson, Mikah Jade Johnson, Brandon Scott Johnson, Anthony William Phelps, Michael David Phelps, Sydney Jordan Richardson and Kurt Charles Richardson; and a special brother-in-law, Eric Lowell Amyx of Miami Township. Burial will be in Germantown Cemetery.”
