His death certificate records Franklin Lindsey Cox, age 66 years 9 months 24 days, born 24 Oct 1873 in Virginia, died 17 Aug 1940 in Mt. Gay, Logan Co., W. Va., address Mud Fork, occupation coal miner, married, husband of Lillian Simpkins, age 26, father George Cox, mother’s maiden name Nancy George, both born in Virginia, cause of death heart attack due to arterio sclerosis, informant Mrs. Lillian Cox, Mt. Gay, W. Va, burial in Whitman Cemetery, Logan Co., WVa.

The reported year of birth is probably off by one; he was recorded as age 5 in the 1880 census and as age 24 born Oct 1876 in the 1900 census. His young second wife seems to have been misinformed or guessing about his birthplace and his mother’s maiden name as well.

The West Virginia birth index lists Lillian Simpkins, born 25 Jan 1917 in Williamson, Mingo Co., West Virginia, father Joe Simpkins, mother’s maiden name Bertha Chapmans.

The West Virginia death index lists Lillian Collins, born 24 Jan 1917, died 26 Mar 1964 in Logan, Logan Co., West Virginia, father Joe Simpkins, mother’s maiden name Bertha Chapman, burial in family cemetery in Vinton, Ohio. (Since Lillian’s birth and death records both list her mother’s maiden name as Chapman, this probably indicates that Bertha had remarried to a Ramey sometime after Joe died.)
