Notes for Edmund Q. Wells
Bath Co., Ky birth records list Edward Wells, born 21 Sep 1858, father Benjamin Wells, mother’s maiden name Mary Jane Wright, child and both parents born in Bath Co.

His death certificate records Edmund Q. Wells, age 71 years 2 months 1 day, born 21 Sep 1857 in Ky, died 22 Feb 1929 in Lexington, Fayette Co., Ky, married, husband of Lillie Wells, father Benjamin Wells, mother’s maiden name Mary Jane Wright, both born in Ky, cause of death apoplexy, informant Ben Wells, Owingsville, Ky, burial in Owingsville Cemetery.

Usually when there is a discrepancy in dates like this, I give precedence to the date from the birth record. But in this case, the 1857 seems more likely. 21 Sep 1858 would be less than 5 months before the birthdate of his brother Fleming, who was recorded as born 13 Apr 1859, also from Bath County birth records. These birth records from the 1850’s were recorded at the time they happened. They were compiled during the spring for all births the previous year, from reports that midwives and doctors were asked to submit of the births they attended the previous calendar year. Sometimes the midwives and doctors would not keep good track of the year, and report births that happened during either the first half of the current year, or from the year before the one that ended the preceding December. So either Edmund was born in Sep 1857 and Fleming in Apr 1859, or else Edmund was born in Sep 1858 and Fleming in Apr 1860. The former hypothesis is more consistent with the 1860 census, which reported Edmund as age 2 and Fleming as age 1, in June of 1860.

Wells, father David Staton, mother’s maiden name Martha Kerr, both born in Ky, cause of death hemorrhage of lungs probably due to tuberculosis, informant Mrs. Walter Maze, Owingsville, Ky, burial in Owingsville Cemetery.
