His death certificate records Jackson Bair, age 30 years 5 months 19 days, born 25 May 1888 in Kentucky, died 24 Oct 1918 in Soldier, Carter Co., Ky, farmer, married, father A. N. Bair, mother’s maiden name Martha Adams, both born in Ky, cause of death influenza, informant Booker Bair, Leadingham, Ky, burial in Bair Cemetery.

All the occurrences of “Bair” on the certificate are oddly written, as if they were orginally Baar, and then someone came in and blacked in the middle of the second ‘a’ and dotted it.

Her death certificate records Rebecca Bear, age 28 years 4 months 14 days, born 12 June 1890 in Kentucky, died 26 Oct 1918 in Laurel precinct, Elliott Co., Ky, married, father France Lemaster, mother’s maiden name Sarah Kegley, both born in Kentucky, cause of death influenza, informant John McDaniel, Leadingham, Ky.

Although Rebecca is recorded as married, she was newly widowed, her husband having succumbed just two days earlier to the same illness. The informant John McDaniel is her brother-in-law, the husband of her sister Lucy.

The next household is headed by Frank Bair age 34 with wife Allace and three daughters.

Jack and Rebecca’s children were raised by her parents after they both died of the flu in 1918.
