Notes for Sylvester D. & Mary Ann (Family)
Morgan Co., Ky marriage records list the marriage 5 June 1850 of Sylvester Gray and Mary Ann White by W. S. Black.
Census
1860 census of Bath Co., Ky, Owingsville precinct, enumerated 11 Aug, lists on p. 224 as family #1622:
Silvester Gray, 31, farm hand; Mary, 29; Polly, 9; Susan, 6; Amos, 4; Stephen, 2. All born in Kentucky.

1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, White Sulphur precinct, enumerated 15 June, lists on p. 35 as family #239:
Gray, Sylvester, 45, works in saw mill; Mary, 35; Polly, 19; Susan, 17; Amos, 15; Stephen, 13; Elizabeth, 11; Martha, 9; Wm F., 3. All born in Kentucky.

The daughter listed as Elizabeth age 11 was probably really only 9 or 10, because she does not appear in the 1860 census. (In 1880 she is listed as age 17.) Which would push the birthdate of Martha later as well.

1880 census of Jackson Co., Ohio, Jefferson township, enumerated 16 June, lists on p. 11 as family #96/99:
Gray, Sylvester, 52, wood chopper, b. Ky Va Va; Mary, 48, wife, b. Ky Va Va; Amos D., 23, son, wood chopper, married; Susan, 24, dau, single; Elizabeth, 17, dau; Mahala, 9, dau; Henry L., 7, son; Alice, 17, sister-in-law, married; Noah, 1, grandchild. All born Ky Ky Ky except Sylvester and Mary (including the baby).

Alice should be listed as a daughter-in-law; she is Amos’ wife. Sylvester and Mary’s son Stephen (age 23) and daughter Martha (age 16) are 12 pages later, with Stephen’s wife Elizabeth.

Sylvester and Mary probably both died before 1900, most likely in Ohio. I cannot find any later records for them. The majority of their children settled in Portsmouth.
