Notes for Rebecca Elizabeth Huddleston
Her death certificate records Rebbeca Short, age 103 years 11 months 3 days, born 5 Aug 1831 in Tenn, died 8 July 1934 in West Liberty, Morgan Co., Ky, widow of Granvil Short, father John Hudleson, mother’s maiden name Betsy Barnes, both born in Tenn, cause of death apoplexy due to old age, informant John M. Elam, West Liberty, Ky, burial in Lewis Henry graveyard.

Her age apparently got inflated a bit over the years; she was recorded as age 11 in the 1850 census (which was probably low, because if true it would mean she was only 13 or 14 when she married in Jan 1853), and as age 33 in the 1870 census. Her real birthdate was probably in 1837 or 1838. Still, that implies a healthy age of 96 or so.

Census
I cannot find this family in the 1860 census. Judging by the reported birthplaces of their children in the 1870 census, they may have been in the process of moving from Tennessee to Kentucky that summer.

1870 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Grasse precinct, Hazel Green P.O., enumerated 18 Aug, lists on p. 8 as family #50/51:
Short, Granville, 36, farmer, b. Va; Rebecca, 33, b. Tenn; William, 16, b. Tenn; Matilda, 14, b. Tenn; John, 12, b. Tenn; James, 10, b. Tenn; Alexander, 8, b. Ky; Lousia, 6, b. Ky; Victoria, 2, b. Ky.

1880 census of Morgan Co., Ky, West Liberty precinct, enumerated 17 June, lists on p. 28 as family #245:
Short, Granvil, 50, bro, farmer, b. Va Va Va; Elizabeth, 46, wife, b. Tenn Tenn Tenn; Louisa, 14, dau; Victora, 12, dau; Tilden, 3, son; Margrett, 8/12, b. Oct, dau.

The “bro” for Granville apparently refers two households back, to the family of Calvin and Louisa Short. The intervening family is headed by Calvin’s married son Elijah, who is refered to as “son” even though he is a head of household with his own family number. This census enumerator seems to, for heads of household, instead of writing “head”, put a forward slash when beginning a new “clan”, and the relationship to the last head of household with a slash if there was one.

Of their children, Louisa, Tilden and Margaret are listed as born Ky Ky Ky, and Victora as born Tenn Tenn Tenn, neither of which is consistent with the reported birthplaces for their parents.

1900 census of Morgan Co., Kentucky, West Liberty precinct, enumerated 16 June, lists on p. 16A as family #301/304:
Short, Granvil, 60, b. May 1840, farmer; Rebesca, wife, 53, b. July 1846, married 36 years, mother of 10 children, 8 living; Maude, dau, 18, b. Aug 1881; Sherman, son, 16, b. Sep 1883. All listed as born Ky Ky Ky, although that conflicts with earlier records.
