Notes for James Albert “Bud” Reffett [Reffit]
During his lifetime his surname appears most often as Reffett, but it is spelled Reffitt on his gravestone, probably because the descendants who erected it chose to adopt the more comment Reffitt spelling.

His death certificate records James A. Reffett, age 78 years 9 months 17 days, born 9 May 1839 in Bath Co., Ky, died 26 Feb 1916 in Preston precinct, Bath Co., Ky, father Darrit Reffett, mother’s maiden name Katherine Blevins, both born in Bath Co., Ky, cause of death dropsy exhaustion & heart failure, informant H. S. Schultz, Olympia, Ky, burial in Shull Graveyard.
Census Notes for Margaret J. Highley
1900 census of Bath Co., Ky, White Sulphur precinct, enumerated 21 June, lists on p. 20A as family #385:
Staton, Jas. W., 27, b. July 1872, farmer, widowed; Margret, mother, 66, b. Mar 1834, widowed, mother of 1 child, 1 living; Bird, grandfather, 89, b. Nov 1811. All born Ky Ky Ky.

Bird’s surname should be recorded as Highley, but isn’t. Margaret had at least three children, although the middle one Martha may have died before 1900. She apparently misinterpreted the question as the number of her children in the household.
