Notes for Samuel S. Ulery
His name is recorded as Samuel I. P. Ulery in the 1900 census, but as Samuel S. Ulery on his gravestone and application for a military veteran’s plaque. The “I P” probably stands for Isaac Peace, it being common in the late 1800’s to name sons for Isaac Peace Rodman, a famous Union general who died at the Battle of Antietam. But apparently some time later in life he decided to switch to a different middle name.

The 1900 census records him as age 5, born Dec 1894, and the 1910 census is consistent with that birth date, recording him as age 15. But his draft registration card and gravestone both say that he was born 5 Dec 1895. I suspect that 1894 is correct, but once he registered for the draft as born in 1895, that became his official birth date. (Military plaques have to have the same birth date that appears in the Army records.)

His WW I draft registration card, filed 5 June 1917, records Samuel Ulery, age 22, residence Owingsville, Bath Co., Ky, born 5 Dec 1895 in Owingsville, Ky, farmer, self-employed, single, supporting father & mother.

The Kentucky death index lists Samuel S. Ulery, age 59, died 29 Sep 1955 in Bath Co., residence same.

His application for a military veteran’s plaque records Samuel S. Ulery, enlisted 20 Sep 1917, honorably discharged 27 Sep 1919, private first class, born 5 Dec 1895, died 29 Sep 1955, burial in Owingsville Cemetery, Owingsville, Ky, applicant Nannie Catherine Ulery.
