Notes for Joseph Lehi Foutz
Joseph’s parents were Jacob Foutz Sr. (1800-1848) and Margaret Mann (1801-1896). Jacob Foutz was wounded in the Haun’s Mill Massacre in October 1838, and was the captain of the Second Fifty of the Second Hundred of the LDS settlement of Utah in spring of 1847. There is an article about them on a web site compiled by one of the descendants of Joseph’s older sister Susan Foutz Brown (1823-1842). While the article is captioned “Susan Foutz Brown”, it is really more about her parents, and hence Joseph’s parents.

Many of the census records for Joseph’s children report their father’s place of birth as Pennsylvania. His own census records, though, report him as born in Missouri, and Mormon migration annals show that his parents moved from Pennsylvania to Hauns Mill, Missouri in 1836. He may have been conceived in Pennsylvania, though. :-)
Census
1850 census of Utah Co., Utah territory, records on p. 32 as family #234:
Margaret Foutz, widow, 48, b. Penn; Joseph, 13, b. Missouri; Margaret D., 11, b. Illinois; Jacob, 6, b. Illinois; Caroline M., 3, b. Deseret, Utah.
Census Notes for Joseph Lehi & Emma Elizabeth (Family)
1870 census of Utah Co., Utah territory, Pleasant Grove precinct, Pleasant Grove P.O., enumerated 23 Aug, lists on pp. 10-11 as family #75/74:
Foutz, Joseph, 33, laborer, b. Missouri; Amanda, 31, b. Ohio; Joseph, 12; Caroline, 10; Alonzo, 7; Mary, 3. All children born in Utah. Emma, 17, b. Ohio.

Emma is Joseph’s second wife. It is curious that their daughter, also named Elizabeth, is not in this census. If she was really born in Nov 1870, it would be only nine months before the birth of her sister Nora Almeda, which is awfully tight spacing.

1880 census of Yavapai Co., Arizona, Mowery Abbey, enumerated 5 June, lists on p. 1 as family #1:
Foutz, Joseph L., 42, b. Missouri Penn Penn, farmer; Amanda, 41, wife, b. Ohio Ohio NY; Emma E., 27, wife, b. Iowa Missouri Missouri; Caroline E., 19, dau; Alonza E., 17, son; Mary D., 12, dau; Emma E., 10, dau; Margaret, 9, dau; Nora A., 8, dau; Cora C., 7, dau; Ida M., 6, dau; Junius L., 4, son; Maude, 5/12, b. Jan, dau. All children born in Utah.

Of the parent birthplace fields, Mary D’s is reported as father born in Iowa and mother in Missouri. This is somewhat odd, even assuming a reversal of parent positions, in that she is a daughter of Amanda, born in Ohio. All the other children report their father as born in Missouri. The mother’s place of birth is reported as Ohio for Caroline, Alonzo, Emma, Nora, Ida, and Junius, and as Iowa for Margaret, Cora, and Maude. This does not match the LDS sealing records, according to which Emma, Nora, Ida, Junius and Maud are Emma’s; the other’s are Amanda’s.

The following household is headed by Joseph L. Foutz Jr, age 22, oldest son of Joseph and Amanda.

1900 census of Coconino Co., Arizona Territory, Navajo Indian Reservation, enumerated 26 June, lists (on reel frame 2) as family #23:
Foutz, Joseph L., 62, b. Mar 1837, Mo Penn Penn, freighter; Emma E., wife, 47, b. May 1853, Iowa England England, married 31 years, mother of 13 children, 11 living; Maud, dau, 20, b. Dec 1879; Alma L., dau, 18, b. Mar 1882; Attha, dau, 14, b. July 1885; Lois, dau, 12, b. Mar 1888; Jocy, dau, 10, b. Nov 1889; Elmer, son, 6, b. Aug 1893; Hewey, son, 4, b. Apr 1896. All children born Arizona Missouri Ohio.

Joseph’s wife #3 Susan is on the preceding page with their children. I do not know where his first wife Amanda is; probably living with one of her children.

1930 census of San Juan Co., New Mexico, Kirtland, enumerated 9 April, lists on p. 3B as family #54/51:
Foutz, Emma, 76, widowed, b. Iowa England England, no occupation; Tanner, Ralph, grandson, 16, single, b. NM Utah Utah.

Ralph is the son of their daughter Nara. The following household is headed by Jess J. Foutz, oldest son of Joseph Lehi’s wife #3, Susan Judd, who is living with him.
