Notes for Nettie Leona Kendall
Her obituary reported:

“Mrs. Nettie Leona Smith, 50, died Wednesday night at 11:30 o’clock at the home on Lincoln Avenue, Dunkirk. She had been ill for the past seven months with complications and seriously ill for the past two months.

Mrs. Smith was born on June 2, 1884 in West Liberty, Ky., and was the daughter of James and Alice Kendall, both deceased. Her first husband was Gideon Adkins, who died three years ago. She later married Leonard Smith, who survives.

Surviving besides the husband are the following children: Mrs. Raymond Wise, Mrs. Harry Watson, Stuart Adkins, Earl Adkins, John and Estella Adkins all of Dunkirk. Mrs. Donald Jacks of Gas City, James Adkins of Winchester and Glen Adkins of near Bryant. One daughter, Mrs. Herman Ford, died seven months ago. There are two sisters, Mrs. Anna DeVault of Hitchins, Ky., Mrs. Virginia Caskey of Pomp, Ky., and a brother, Stuart Kendall, of Kentucky.

The body was removed to the Sam R. Martin funeral home and prepared for burial. Funeral services will be held from the Nazarene church Saturday morning at 10 o’clock. Rev. Marion Brown, pastor of the Nazarene church, will officiate. Interment in a cemetery at Windfall.”

Notes by Ben F. Adkins to this obit: Her death certificate states that she died August 22, 1934, 50 years of age, at Dunkirk, Indiana. The primary cause of death was carcinoma of the cervix.

The married name of her sister Anna Kendall at the time was Duvall, not DeVault.

The 1900 census reported her birth date as June 1883.
