Notes for Laban Leander Derifield
Lawrence Co., Ky birth records list Laban L. Derrifield, born 24 Mar 1859, father David Derrifield, mother’s maiden name Jane Culver.
Ancestry.com has indexed this birth as 24 Mar 1857, but it seemed inconsistent with other records such as the 1860 census. Further investigation revealed that the entire page of birth records that Laban was listed on, containing about 50 names, were 1859 births that had been misfiled under 1857. The pages except the first one for each year did not contain the year, just the month and day for each birth. I did a search in the 1860 census of Lawrence Co. for anyone born in 1859 +/- 1 year, and almost every child on that page of supposedly 1857 births showed up as age 1 or under (except for a few who could not be found at all, probably because they died in infancy or the family moved away, and a few born in January or February who showed up as 2, presumably rounded up from one and a half.) None appeared as age 3, and none born late in the year appeared as 2. I did not investigate the other pages indexed as 1857; but probably more than one page was misindexed.
I cannot find a death record for Laban, in Kentucky, Ohio or West Virginia. Date of death is from his gravestone.

Only the two youngest children are Melissa’s. (Lawrence Co., Ky marriage records list the marriage on 14 Aug 1863 of David Derifield and Malissa Culver.)
The next household is headed by Derascus Derifield, age 27, with wife Alifair age 25.
