His death certificate records Robert L. Baker, age and birth date both blank, born in Ky, died 22 June 1935 in precinct 14, Clay Co., Kentucky, usual residence Greensburg, Indiana, married, husband of Flora Ball Baker, farmer, father Thos Baker, mother’s maiden name Emma Lyttle, both born in Ky, cause of death gun shot wound died suddenly, injury occurred while driving in car, informant Gilbert Baker, Teges, Ky, burial in Ball Cemetery.

The 1900 census listed his birthdate as Feb 1884. His gravestone gives his date of birth as 18 Feb 1883. It has a military veteran’s marker identifying him as a private in the 6th Battery Field Artillery.

His application for that veteran’s marker lists Baker, Robert (NMI), birth date 18 Feb 1883 (typed, month changed in red ink to March), enlisted 31 July 1901 in Kentucky, discharged 30 July 1904, grade private, 6th Batt’y Field Artillery, died 22 June 1935, filed for by Gilbert Baker on 22 July 1955, to be shipped to Gilbert Baker, burial in private cemetery, Ammie, Ky.

Be careful not to confuse him with Robert Baker Jr., born 6 May 1882 in Clay Co., Ky, son of Robert Baker and Nancy House, who married Dora Phillips, and died 1 Dec 1944 in Crab Orchard, Lincoln Co., Ky.

Flora is not really widowed. Robert and his brother Hugh were both in the penitentiary in Frankfort in the 1920 census. Considering the family’s penchant for violent retribution, I expect they most likely took revenge for the Feb 1919 murder of their brother James, and were serving time for that.

The next household is headed by Flora’s parents, Robert Ball age 57 and Betty age 55.
