Census Notes for Allison “Aulsy” Justice
1850 census of Floyd Co., Ky, enumerated 8 Aug, lists on pp. 40-41 as family #237:
Aulsy Justice, 37; Leanah, 22; Solomon, 14; Hannah, 12; Mary, 10; Jonathan, 8; Valentine, 6; Jocca, 1. Nancy Tackett, 25; Ara, 55; Rebecca, 15. Ara Tackett’s birth place is unknown, all others born in Kentucky.

Leannah is a second wife; only Jocca is her child. Ara is Leanna’s mother, and Nancy and Rebecca are probably her sisters.

1860 census of Floyd Co., Ky, Prestonburg P.O., enumerated 1 Aug, lists on p. 75 as family #490:
Alison Justice, 48, farmer, b. Tenn; Leanah, 33, seamstress; Rhoda Gearhart, 19, seamstress; Jouisian, 11; Harvy, 9; Malinda, 7; Julia A., 3; James, 1. Nancy Tackett, 27, seamstress. Everyone except Alison born in Ky.

There should have been the surname Justice entered after Jouisian. Its absence has caused the five younger children to all be incorrectly indexed as Gearharts. (I am unsure of the relationship of Rhoda. There is no match for her with this family in 1850. The preceding household is headed by Allen Gearhart age 48 and wife Eliza age 41, but there is no Rhoda in their family in 1850 either.)

1870 census of Floyd Co., Ky, precinct 9, Prestonburg P.O., enumerated 10 Aug, lists on p. 9 as family #63/62:
Justice, Alse, 59, farmer, b. Tenn; Luanna (or Leeanna), 35; Harvey, 19; Malinda, 17; Julia A., 15; James, 12. There are dittos in the birthplace column for all the other family members, making them appear to be born in Tennessee, but Kentucky was probably intended to be in there somewhere. Also in the household are Alse’s future second wife Lydia Newman, 33, housework, b. Va, with her son Wesley, 5, b. Ky.

1880 census of Carter Co., Ky, precinct 5, enumerated 7 June, lists on p. 2 as family #16:
Justice, Allenson, 68, farmer, b. Tenn N.C. Tenn; Lydia, 39, wife, b. Va Va Va; Newman, Wesly, 15, stepson, farm laborer, b. Ky Va Va.

1900 census of Carter Co., Ky, district 5, enumerated 9 June, lists on p. 9A as family #96:
Justice, Als..., 89, b. Feb 1811, Ky Tenn Tenn, farmer; Lidey, wife, 62, b. Aug 1837, Va Va Va, married 20 years, mother of 2 children, 1 living. Mary, niece, 30, b. May 1870, Ky Va Va, widowed, mother of 1 child, 1 living.

There is one of those darn counting annotations on top of the end of Alse’s name (and every other head of household name), causing it to be impossible to tell how it continues.
Notes for Lydia Newman
Her death certificate records Lydia Justice, age 80 years 6 months 12 days, born 15 Aug 1840 in Ky, died 27 Feb 1921 in Pleasant Valley precinct, Carter Co., Ky, widowed, father Jas. Newman, mother’s maiden name Polly Blevins, both born in Va, cause of death organic heart mitral regurgitation, informant Mrs. Nath Hall, Counts Road, Ky, burial in Baker Cem.

She was recorded with her parents in the 1850 census of Russell Co., Virginia as age 12, so the birth date of Aug 1837 that she reported in the 1900 census is probably correct.
