Identification as a son of Thomas Jones and Mary Katherine Smith is based on the fact that their daughter Alice, widow of Harry Johnson, was living with James and Phoebe in the 1940 census, recorded as his sister.

Both residents of Fleming Co. and born in Fleming Co., parents not named, first marriage for both. Marriage performed by Rev. W. W. Sparks at his house, witnesses Mrs. W. W. Sparkes and Mrs. Roger Cassity. Bond surety by Harry M. Hanley.
