Notes for James & Mary Ellen (Family)
Magoffin Co., Ky marriage records list the marriage on 13 Mar 1879 of James Brown and Mary E. Jenkins.

This family is in my database only because they are easily confused with the family of John Lacy Brown and Mary Ellen Brown who married 27 Mar 1880 in Morgan County.
Census
1880 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Paint precinct, enumerated 19 June, lists on p. 28 as family #195/198:
Brown, James, 22, farmer; Ellender, 18; Susanah, 2/12, b. April. All born Ky Ky Ky.

1900 census of Morgan Co., Ky, precinct 5, enumerated 6 June, lists on p. 7A as family #100:
Brown, James, 43, b. June 185- (see comment below), farmer; Ellen, wife, 37, b. Apr 1863, married 21 years, mother of 12 children, 11 living; Martha, dau, 18, b. Jan 1882; George, son, 11, b. Mar 1889; Betta, dau, 9, b. Apr 1891; Jack, son, 6, b. Sep 1893; Jasper, son, 4, b. Nov 1896; Salla, dau, 2, b. Mar 1898; Bertha, dau, 3/12, b. Mar 1900. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The year of birth for James is smudged, and the original age is blotted out and replaced with 43 above in pencil. It looks to me the year originally had 1857 and 1856 on top of each other, and the age orginally said 46, which is consistent with neither birth year. It looks like the person reconciling ages and dates “corrected” the age to 43 to be consistent with a birth year of 1856. But other census years suggest that it may be the age of 46 which was correct (e.g., he was recorded as age 6 in 1860), and the year either misread or wrong (perhaps instead of a superimposed 7 and 6, it was 3 and 4).

The birth dates for Jackson and Jasper do not match their WW I draft registrations, and the birth date for Ellen does not match either her birth or death records, so I suspect that the other birth dates are not trustworthy either.

1910 census of Magoffin Co., Ky, Bloomington precinct, enumerated 16 April, lists on p. 1B as family #18/20:
Brown, James, 57, farmer; Ellen, wife, 48, first marriage for both, married 30 years, mother of 13 children, 11 living; Jack, son, 16; Jasper, son, 14; Sally, dau, 12; Joe, son, 7. All born Ky Ky Ky.
