Levi Carpenter, 43, farmer; Mary E., 31; Albert, 10; Derinda, 9; Harvy J., 5; Clarinda, 3; Mary F., 1. All born in Ky.
1870 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Hamptons Mill precinct 5, enumerated 19 July, lists on p. 3 as family #15/16:
Carpenter, Levi S., 52, farmer; Mary E., 40; Albert M., 21; Derinda, 19; Nancy, 8; Lucinda, 6; Mary C., 3; Valentine, 4/12. All born in Ky.
Notice that all three of the youngest children from the 1860 census are no longer in the household. The daughter listed as Mary F. age 1 in 1860 must have died very young, for them to reuse the name Mary for another daughter born about 1867. Perhaps a flu epidemic hit the family?

They are in the midst of a cluster of Carpenter families, including households headed by Josiah Carpenter age 21 at #53, John Carpenter age 29 at #51, Frank Carpenter age 27 at #47, and Levi Carpenter age 36 at #45.
1900 census of Morgan Co., Ky, Chapel precinct, enumerated 12 June, lists on p. 9B as family #118:
Carpenter, Mathew, 30, b. Feb 1870, Ky Ind Ky, farmer; Mary E., wife, 27, b. Aug 1872, married 10 years, mother of 1 child, 1 living; Walter R., son, 8, b. Aug 1891; Levi S., father, 83, b. Aug 1816, Ind Ind Ind, married 55 years.
The Indiana birth place for Levi is a change from what was reported in all the earlier censuses. Mathew must be the son recorded as Valentine age 4 months in 1870, and as Valentine C. on his death certificate.
