The birthdate may be off by a year, since he was listed in the 1900 census as born Sep 1890.

In 1920 he was listed twice, once in Rowan Co. with his parents, as age 27, widowed, and once in Anderson, Madison Co., Indiana, as Farmer Alfrey, boarder, 27, single, laborer at factory, with the family of Thomas L. Clapp and Belle Parker (see their census notes for details), and three other Alfreys, including his brother Herbert.
