Notes for Thomas W. Rose
His death certificate records Thomas W. Rose, age 84, born in Ky (birth date blank), married, father Ben F. Rose, mother’s maiden name Nancy Reed, both born in Ky, cause of death renal cardio vascular disease, informant blank, burial in Caudill Cemetery.

There are no dates on his stone. His FindaGrave memorial says that he was born 12 Mar 1846 in Tazewell Co., Virginia, but the census records say that he was born in Kentucky.

A note by my dad’s third cousin Jack Lee Rose, son of Thomas Hubert Rose and Grace Hall (my relationship is through the Hall side), grandson of Thomas W. Rose’s half-brother Wesley W. Rose, summarized his biography thusly:

“Thomas W. Rose, joined the 39th Mounted Infantry on February 16, 1863 at Peach Orchard, Kentucky.  At the tie of enlisted he was 15 years old.

He was born in  Tazewell County, Virginia, in 1847.  Son of Edward S Rose and Nancy Reed, the family moved to Eastern Kentucky in the 1850's and lived in Floyd, Morgan and Lawrence Counties.

Thomas W. Rose's father Edward joined the 5th West Virginia Infantry in 1862 so both of them were serving at the same time.  After the war Thomas studied law.  He was a lawyer in Morehead, Kentucky, and was Rowan County Attorney in 1909.  He was commissioned a Captain during hte Spanish American War and serviced as a Recruiter and Organiser.
Thomas died in 1930, and is buried in Caudill Cemetery, Morehead, Kentucky.”

His compiled military service is on file M-397 Roll 495, National Archives:

THOMAS W. ROSE, Co K 39 Reg. Ky, Inf (Mtd) Co.  Desck. Bk: age 18, 5' 2 1/2", fair compl., blue eyes, dark hair, b. Taswell Co., VA., occ: shoemaker, enl. Nov 8/62 at Lawrence Co., Ky. by G. C. Ford for 3 yrs.

There is also a pension file for him, which I have not accessed. The index lists it as:
Thomas W. Rose, widow Motie Lee Rose. Co. E 4 Ky. Inf and Co. K 39 Ky Mounted Infantry. Invalid application #798857 filed 1890, cert. 588605, Ky. Widow’s pension application #1665359, filed 1930, certificate A-7-7-30, Ky.
Notes for Mote “Mottie” Lee Weaver
Her obituary in the Rowan County News of Thursday, March 16, 1950 reported:

“Funeral services for Mrs. Mottie Lee Rose, a lady who could recite almost the entire history of Morehead, were conducted yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon from the residence.

Mrs. Rose, 83, was the wife of the late Captain T. W. Rose, one of Morehead’s most widely known citizens, and the daughter of the late Buford and Elizabeth Cypress Weaver.

She was born in Rowan County October 14, 1866 and spent her entire life here.

Mrs. Rose passsed away Sunday in the Huntington, W. Va. Memorial Hospital.

Her husband was a public official of Rowan County for many years.

Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Dot Banks, J. B. Rose and Arkie Rose, all of Morehead; Mrs. Lella Gallagher of Huntington; Mrs. Mary Caudill, of Hamilton, Ohio; Mrs. Beulah Kerfoot of Garden City, Kansas; Marion B. Rose, of Middletown, Ohio; and Myrtle Caudill, of Middletown. Three children, William and Edward Rose and Mrs. Lena Eckellsburg preceded her in death. Mrs. Rose also leaves 24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Rev. Buell H. Kazee, assisted by Clifford Hutchinson, officiated at the final rites. Arrangements were handled by the Anderson Funeral Home.

Although not so active in her later years, Mrs. Rose always showed a keen interest in civic and community affairs and was perhaps the best versed woman in Morehead on its history and the growth of the county. Possessing a remarkable memory, she could recall many interesting incidents that happened before the turn of the century.

Active casket bearers at the funeral were: E. P. Hall, John Will Holbrook, Luther Fraley, Bill McBrayer, E. B. Sluss, Clifford Hutchinson.

Honorary bearers included: Dr. T. A. E. Evans, J. W. Hogge, Vernon Alfrey, Noah Kennard, Roscoe Hutchinson Sr., D. B. Caudill, Jack Tackett, Lester Hogge, Frank Havens, Sam Allen, Luster Blair, Cecil Fraley, Newton Kissinger and Bert Proctor.”

I cannot find a death certificate for her on the West Virginia archives site28 nor in the Kentucky death records.
Notes for Thomas W. & Mote “Mottie” Lee (Family)
Rowan Co., Ky marriage register A, b. 22, records the marriage on 6 Nov 1888 of Thomas W. Rose and Mottie Weever.
Census
1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 11 June, lists on p. 8A as family #152:
Rose, Thomas W, age 53, b. Mar 1847, farmer; Motie, wife, age 52, b. Mar 1848, married 30 years, 8 children, 8 living; William, son, 20, day laborer; Marion, son, 17, b. Feb 1880; Mertie 14, dau, b. Mar 1886; Manda (or Mauda), dau, 10, b. Apr 1890; Edward, son, 8, b. May 1892; James, son, 6, b. July 1893; Lena, dau, 3, b. July 1897; Delila, dau, 1, b. Jan 1899. All born Ky Ky Ky.

The reported age for Motie is off by 20 or 21 years from that suggested by other censuses! Yet the handwriting is very clear and distinct. My conjecture is that what happened is that Thomas interpreted the questions wrong and replied with the number of years since his first marriage, to Mary Cox, and the total number of his children, including those from his marriage to Margaret Chapman. Then the census taker, figuring that a 32 year old wife could not possibly have been married 30 years, either misheard her reported age as 52 rather than 32, or else “fixed” it to be consistent with the length of marriage.

Since they had really only been married 11 years, only the 5 youngest children would be Motie’s.
