His obituary in the Charleston [WV] Gazette of 23 June 1998 reported:

“Joe D. Hardin, 68, of Sarah Ann, Logan County, died June 20, 1998, in General Division, CAMC, after a short illness.

He was a retired miner from A.T. Massey Coal Co., a member of Neibert Memorial Methodist Church, Logan, and was past patron of Eastern Star Chapter No. 60, Logan. He was a member of Beni Kedem Knights Temple, Charleston, Aracoma Lodge No. 99, Logan Chapter No. 41, R.A.M., and Logan Commandery No. 26, Knights Templar.

Surviving: wife, Ida Hardin; daughters, Pam Bennett of Greensboro, N.C., Doris Winter of Stirrat; sons, Alan of Johnson City, Tenn., Joe D. Jr. of Logan; sisters, Bertha James and Aleen Smith, both of Rawl, Alberta Grace of Roanoke, Va.; brothers, Bill Hardin of Roanoke, Homer Hardin of Stirrat, Cecil Hardin of Rawl; two grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Neibert Memorial Methodist Church, Logan, with the Rev. Bruce Reed officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Collins-Slater Funeral Home, Switzer.”
