HIs death certificate records David Crockett Sturgill, age 89 years 3 months 14 days, born 27 July 1863 in Elliott Co., died 7 Nov 1952 in Bruin, Elliott Co., widowed, farmer, father Isaac Sturgill, mother’s maiden name Ruthie Sturgill, cause of death pulmonary edema due to cerebral hemorrhage due to arteriosclerosis, informant blank, burial in Sturgill Cem, Bruin, Ky.
Elliott County was not formed until the spring of 1869. Both his parents were recorded in Carter Co. in 1850 (before their marriage) and 1860, so that is probably where he was really born.
Do not confuse him with the David Sturgill born 1 Feb 1855 in Letcher Co., son of McGuire Sturgill and Elizabeth Back. (Since this David was recorded in most records just as D. C. Sturgill, Ancestry tends to pull up the birth and census records for the David Sturgill in Letcher Co in preference to this one, even though their ages differ by 8 years, and lots of people then construct erroneous trees based on those “hints”.)
The mother’s maiden name on the death certificate is correct. His father was Isaac Lee Sturgill born 20 Apr 1837, died 9 Apr 1913 in Elliott Co., son of Alvin Sturgill and Nancy Fraley. His mother was Ruth (also recorded as Rutha and Ruthie) Sturgill, b. ca 1841, died 21 April 1920 in Elliott Co., daughter of Hervey Sturgill and Mary “Polly” Leadingham. Researchers should also be careful not to confuse his father with the Isaac Sturgill who was born 16 Sep 1833, son of Francis Sturgill and Ruth Gilly, who married Henrietta “Ritta” Brown, and died 19 Nov 1911 in Letcher Co.

Daughter of Henry Maggard (b. 20 June 1853 in Letcher Co., Ky, d. 4 Mar 1920 in Carter Co., Ky) and Nancy Jane Williams (b. 17 June 1855 in Carter Co., Ky, d. 1 Nov 1904 in Carter Co., Ky). Henry was the son of John Maggard and Savilla Mullins of Wise Co., Virginia. Nancy was the daughter of Eli Williams and Lucinda Sturgill.
