Notes for George Grisso Sr.
Biographical Record of Clark Co., Ohio, pp. 216-218, profile titled "The Centenarian Pioneer of Donnels Creek, George Grisso, Sr." This article states that George Grisso was born in "Coffin Tree township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania." There was no "Coffin Tree" twp in Pennsylvania. There is a Coventry twp in Chester Co., PA, which fits with other records that Mathias and Elizabeth Grisso lived along the Delaware River near the present Pottstown, PA in the years following their marriage.

An article about a family reunion in honor of his 100th birthday, printed in the Springfield Daily Republic, 10 July 1883, repeats much of the data from the same profile.

Listed on page 32 of the Dore M. Frantz burials document. Tombstone includes dates of birth and death.

Notes for Nancy Frantz
Dates of birth and death from her tombstone, as cited in the Dore M. Frantz Burials document, p. 32. Early Families of Clark Co., Vol. 5, p. 97, submission by Hazel Parks, instead has the dates Jan 1799 – 6 Mar 1870, her source not known.

Nancy was said to be (according to a history of Clark County) a cousin of George's first wife, Catherine Frantz. If this is right and "cousin" meant "first cousin", she must be a daughter of either John Frantz or Abraham Frantz. (These are the sons of Michael Frantz II whose offspring I do not have a full list of.) She may be a more distant cousin. On the other hand, since Nancy was 44 at the time of her marriage, it is also possible that she was the widow of a Frantz, and that it is not her maiden surname. The editors of county histories are notorious at making assumptions on little evidence.

There is no record of the marriage of George Grisso to Nancy Frantz in the Clark County marriage bonds. I have found a marriage record for "George Cressel and Nancy France" on 20 Jan 1842 in Montgomery County court records. This is one year earlier than the date that Clark Co. histories give for George's remarriage, but within the range of error typical for such histories. Since there are no other records of any "Cressel" families in this part of Ohio, and George was not literate, my working assumption is that this represents the best guess transcription of a minister who did not know the Grisso family. (Note also that the marriage bond of George & Catherine lists his name as "Cressoe", written by the minister and marked with George's X.)
