Notes for Joseph C. Ohmart
1870 census of Pleasant twp,Wabash County, IN, on p. 27, enumerated 9 Aug, lists this family (#200) as: Ohmart, Joseph, 30, b. OH; Nancy, 27, b. OH; Lloyd B., 6, b. IN; Charlie, 3, b. IN; Lorain, 11, b. IN. "Lorain" is a male, almost surely Loren (#216), the son of Joseph's brother Levi and his first wife Rebecca Harter.
1880 census of Pleasant twp, enumerator's district #181, Wabash County, Indiana, lists this family (#213) as: Ohmart, Joseph, 40, b. OH (VA VA); N. J., 37, b. OH (VA VA); Loyal, 16, b. IN; Charles, 12, b. IN, Shock, Lela A. 19, servant.
Joseph's gravestone says 1840-1911 (see p. 54 of Lester Binnie's Cemetery Records of Paw Paw and Pleasant Townships, Wabash Co., IN.)
George Heeter's Chart of Ohmart Genealogy also includes with this family "Samuel b. 1870 adopted". However, note that no Samuel appears with the family in the 1870 or 1880 censuses. Perhaps this is an error with its roots in Joseph's rearing of his nephew Loren (son of Levi d. 1872.) If they did raise a Samuel, perhaps he also was a son of Levi, by his second wife Sarah Click Baird (d. 1870)? But if so, then he would have to be a twin of Simon, born Jan 1870. What I really need to do is check obituaries, wills, and guardianship records.
