Notes for John C. Heeter
Known as "Framer John", he built many of the barns in the Eel River Brethren community.

His stone in Pleasant Grove (aka Union) Cemetery, North Manchester, reads John C. Heeter, 9 Feb 1818 - 3 Apr 1887, Vet. 61-65 Elizabeth, his wife, 13 Nov 1827 - 28 July 1914.

Wabash Co. death records, bk 1882-99, p. 45, lists J. Heeter, d. 4-3-1887, age 70.

Wabash County History, Bicentennial Edition 1976, has an article on p. 389 by Mrs. Dale Heeter, that reads in part: "West of Liberty Mills on an angling road stands the thick-walled brick house built by Ohio-born John C. Heeter. He came to Indiana and obtained for himself the name of "framer John" because he excelled in framing buildings securely. The combs of his buildings are still straight and unsagging after more than 125 years of weathering storms and suns. He was married twice - first to Amelia A. Michaels (12/20/1822 - 2/10/1844), later to Elizabeth (Ruth) Burkett. John C. was born Feb. 9, 1818; Elizabeth was born Nov. 13, 1828. They toiled building and farming and had a family of ten children. Death claimed Elisha at age 4, Elizabeth at age 5, and Sarah at 16 years of age. Of the other children, Gorman became a minister and married Rachael Fanning... Eliza married farmer Joseph Hoover. Lydia was a minister's wife, Rev. John Arnold, Illinois, who had lost the mother of his two daughters and did well in choosing Lydia as their stepmother. Jesse, a farmer, married Lavina Madlem. Charles, a farmer and carpenter, was married first to Mary Kyler. In late years his second marriage was to Sue Smith Beck. John A., who farmed on the homeplace, was married to Martha Tuckey. Mahlon, a farmer and carpenter, was married to Truda Butterbaugh."
Notes for Elizabeth Ruth Burkett
She may have been born in 1828; the date on her cemetery inscription does not match that in the article in the Wabash Co. History (see notes for John C. Heeter.)
