Notes for Johannes Garber
This family profiled on pages 7-10 and page 20 of The Garber Genealogical and Historical Record, Vol. III, by Daniel Garber. Of their 10 listed children, only the descendents of their two grandsons John, son of Samuel, and Joseph, son of Joseph, are included in the volume.

Daniel Garber in the book cited above identifies John Garber later of Maryland and Virginia with a Johannes H. Garber who arrived in the port of Philadelphia aboard the ship Phoenix, on 28 Aug 1750, at the age of 33. This identification has been very widely disseminated and now appears in many references. However, the signature on the ship passenger list does not match that of our Johannes Garber on later documents (e.g., in 1774 as an executor of the estate of John Stoner of Frederick Co., Maryland), and it should thus be considered unknown when our Johannes Garber arrived in America. Since the generally circulated birthdate of 1717 comes from the immigration record, our Johannes' birthdate is also not known. See articles by W. J. Garber and Richard R. Weber in the Fellowship of Brethren Genealogists Newsletter, Vol. 21, no. 4 (Winter 1992), and Vol. 25, no. 2 (Summer 1993).

He first settled in York Co., PA, where he married Barbara Miller. The family moved to Frederick County, Maryland in the spring of 1768, and from there to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 1775. He was one of the founders of the Flat Rock Congregation at Linville's Creek in what is now Rockingham Co.

Will Book A, York Co., PA, p. 73, records Letters of Administration of Ulrich Leman, granted 14 May 1753 to John Garber and wife Barbara.
