His obituary in the Springfield Daily News of Sat, 8 Feb 1930, reported “J. V. Detrick, 84, of Champaign, Illinois, formerly of 119 E. Columbia St., this city, died at 11 p.m. Thursday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Rev. and Mrs. J. S. Ebersole of Champaign, according to word received in Springfield. Heart disease was the cause of death. Mr. Detrick had been making his home with his daughter for the last two weeks. Prior to that time, he had been living in Springfield for the last 15 years. He was born in Clark County, was a retired farmer, and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.”

His obituary in the Champaign News Gazette of Friday, 7 Feb 1930 reported “John V. Detrick, father of Mrs. J. S. Ebersole, 607 West Hill Street, died at 1:45 o’clock Friday morning, at the parsonage of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Detrick had been making his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Rev. and Mr.s Ebersole, since they moved her a few weeks ago from Carbondale. He had been confined to his bed only for the past week, with heart trouble and pneumonia causing his death.

Mr. Detrick was born on September 4, 1845 at Springfield, Ohio, living there most of his life. His wife preceded him in death 21 years ago.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at the home of his son, Charles O. Detrick, Northampton, Ohio, a suburb of Springfield. A short service will also be held at 7:30 o’clock Friday evening at the parsonage here, with Rev. M. S. Bryant, an old friend, in charge. The body will be taken at midnight to Springfield, Ohio for burial on Sunday, with Rev. and Mrs. Ebersole accompanying it. Surviving Mr. Detrick are his daughter, Mrs. Maud T. Ebersole of Champaign, and son Charles of Northampton, Ohio.”
