Notes for Samuel Pettit
The marriages of Samuel Pettit to Susan Coons and Nancy Coons are in the IGI, Batch 8320802, pages 96 and 98, as well as an article by Harry W. Mills on the Coons family. See Notes for John Coons for details.

Montgomery Co. Deed Book 18, p. 313, dated 6 Jun 1838, Samuel Pettit and Nancy his wife of the county of Morgan and state of Illinois convey to Asa T. Pettit for $200 paid to them in hand all their title, claim and interest ion a lot of land on Slate Creek on which there is erected a watergrist mill, saw mill, horse mill, dwelling house and store house, which property is now occupied by Asa T. Pettit and formerly known as Myer's Mills.
Census
It is likely that Samuel is the son age 16-18 in the 1820 census reading for Thomas Pettit of Montgomery Co.

I have not found a census entry for this Samuel Pettit before 1850, when he is enumerated in Mason Co., Illinois, where he appears to be a rather prosperous merchant:
Pettit, Samuel, 47, VA, merchant $10,000; Nancy, 46, KY; George, 21, KY.

(Since George was born in KY in 1829 or 1830, the family was probably there in 1830. But there are no Samuel Pettits in the 1830 census of Montgomery Co., and the only one in the 1830 census of Bath Co. is the one who married Mary Sharp and then Rebecca Foster. I should check Illinois, as well as Clark Co., Ky, where Samuel's brother Asa was married in June 1830.)
