Notes for Thomas Darling Pettit
Sylvia Pettit Welch (see notes for Obediah Pettit) writes in 1932: "Thomas Pettit born Mar. 28, 1767 married Mar. 8, 1797 Margaret Pratt (or Betsey). Their son Asa T. Pettit born in 1810 married in Clark Co. June 24, 1830 Sallie A. Johns. Their son James Pettit born in 1844 married Frances McKinney. Their granddaughter Sylvia Pettit Welch (Mrs. W. H. Welch) whose line this is."

Mrs. Welch claims that Thomas is the son of James Pettit & Martha McCone, and that James Pettit is the son of William Pettit (1726-1801) and Charity Stevenson. But Asahel Pettit's "The Pettit Family in America" book does not list a son James for William and Charity, and he is fairly close to the source, having interviewed his grandfather, William V. Pettit, a son of William Pettit and Charity Stevenson, about all his siblings.

Thomas is listed on the Montgomery Co., KY, tax list from 1806-1838, on Watercourse Spencer. Montgomery Co. Deed Book 4, p. 12, contains deed dated 17 Feb 1806 conveying from Charles Yancey of Louisa Co., Virginia to Thomas Pettit of Montgomery Co. Kentucky containing 300 acres part of a military claim in the name of William Hughes and also containing 2000 acres adjacent to the military claim land. Witnessed by William Jameson, John Beatty, and Jacob Coons, and signed for Yancey by his attorney Asa Thompson.

This Thomas is a good bet for being closely related to our Matthew Pettit: they are six years apart in age, they are on adjacent pages in the 1810 census of Montgomery Co., and they both have sons named Samuel and daughters named Nancy. I have not located either of them prior to 1805. (This is possibly the Thomas Pettit taxable in 1790 in Mason Co., Ky, but that is much more likely to be the Thomas O. Pettit later of Shelby Co., q.v.)
Census
Montgomery Co. Ky tax rolls list:
1806: Thomas Pettet 1 white male over 21, no white males 16-21; 3 blacks, all over 16; 5 horses; 300 acres on Spencer Creek [Bk 1, p. 21]
1807: Thomas Pettit 1 white male over 21, no white males 16-21; 4 blacks, all over 16; 3 horses; 300 acres on Spencer Creek [Bk 2, p. 18]
1808: Thomas Pettit 1 white male over 21, no white males 16-21; 4 blacks, all over 16; 2 horses; 351 acres on Spencer Creek [Bk 1, p. 24]
1809: Thomas Petit 1 white male over 21; 4 blacks, all over 16; 3 horses; 151 acres on Spencer Creek [Bk 2, p. 23]
1810: Thomas Pettit 1 white male over 21; 4 blacks, all over 16; 3 horses; 351 acres on Spencer Creek [page 36]
(Males over 21 are the only whites counted in 1809 and 1810.)

1810 census of Montgomery Co., KY, p. 370, lists family of:
Thomas Petett, 4 m < 10, 1 m 10-15, 1 m > 45, 4 f < 10, 1 f 26-45.

1820 census of Montgomery Co., KY, p. 251, line 19, lists family of:
Thomas Pettitt, 1 m < 10, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 16-18, 1 m > 45, 3 f < 10, 1 f 10-15, 1 f 16-25, 1 f > 45.

1830 census of Montgomery Co., KY, p. 9, line 7, lists family of:
Thomas Pettitt, 1 m 15-19, 1 m 60-69, 1 f 15-19.

From the above, it appears that Thomas had at least 6 sons and 7 daughters born after 1794, although 2 of the 4 sons who were under 10 in 1810 either died young or left home young. If any had left home, they either moved out-of-county or were living with in-laws, as Thomas was the only Pettit in Montgomery Co. in 1820 & 1830.
