Some information on this family from Hal Phillips, a grandson of George Barber and Mary Sue Hall. Note that Jim and Sally Ann were first cousins.
Census
1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearce precinct, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 24 as family #189/211:
Barber, James, 34, farmer; Sarah A., 32, wife; Nannie, 9, dau; Mertie, 6, dau; John, 4, son; George, 2, son. All born Ky Ky Ky.

Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org both index this record under the surname Barker, but what has been interpreted as the bottom right edge of a k is really an e made in the way that looks like a small backwards 3. Many of the e’s on the page are formed that way. (The top of the a is also not closed, and the b has no loop, so that it looks like Burler or Burkr.)

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearce precinct, enumerated 8 June, lists on p.5B as family #90:
Barber, James, 55, b. Aug 1844, farmer; Sallie A., wife, 54, b. Apr 1846, married 34 years, mother of 7 children, 6 living; Lewis K., son, 18, b. Aug 1881; Jessie, son, 13, b. Aug 1886; Hobert, grandson, 3, b. July 1896; Nannie, niece, 14, b. June 1885; Jessie, nephew, 13, b. July 1886. Nipper, Mary, boarder, 66, b. Jan 1834, Va Va Va, widowed, mother of 7 children, 7 living.

Hobert is the son of John W. Barber and his first wife Mattie Brown. John was still alive, and remarried to Rose Steagall, but since Mattie died when Hobert was only one month old, and John did not remarry until Dec 1898, his parents raised Hobert so that the baby would have a mother’s care.

The niece Nannie and the nephew Jessie are children of Sally’s brother Thomas P. Barber and Alice Dehart. They are also listed this same census year in Elliott County with their parents. (It must have been confusing having a son and a nephew only one month apart in age with the same name.)

1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Farmers precinct, enumerated 19 April, lists on p. 2A as family #11:
Barber, James, 65, farmer; Sally A., wife, 62, first marriage for both, married 45 years, mother of 7 children, 6 living; Jesse, son, 22, married, fireman on railroad; Edna, dau-in-law, 18, b. Penn Penn Penn, married 1 year, no children; Hobart, grandson, 13. All except Edna born Ky Ky Ky.

The next household is headed by their son George, who is married to Mary Susan Hall.
