Notes for Joseph Clark
"The Archives of the Pioneers of Tazewell Co., Virginia", 1992, by Netti Schriener-Yantis, footnote #85 on page 263, contains a quote from G. T. Swain's 1927 "History of Logan Co., W. Va", p. 78, "Joseph Clark, of Culpeper Co., settled at what is known as the Floyd place, on the Trace fork of Pigeon. He married a Miss Britton of Pittsylvania Co. & had six sons and four daughters. His sons were John B., who married Mary McDonald; Thomas K., who married a Miss Clay; Carter T., who married a daughter of Captain Henry Farley; Joseph M., who went to Tennessee in 1812; Henry, who married [...] Jonathan B. Bailey (sic) of Mercer; Polly, who married James Suthers; Rebecca who married Jonas McDonald; and Sallie, who married Roland Dillon. Of these sons John B. settled at the mouth of Pigeon and had one son, Thomas W. , who was the father of the wife of Dr. D. M. Waldron. Thomas K. had three sons, one of whom (Charles) was a soldier in the Mexican War, and Carter T. had four sons, Henry P., Ira L., Joseph M. and Guy, and from these have sprung the Clarks of Tug Valley."

The "[...]" above is not in the footnote, but the "(sic)" is. Note that there are only 5 sons and 3 daughters enumerated above. One of each is missing. The "sic" would indicate that the Logan Co. history really contains the odd phrase about Henry who married Jonathan Bailey; the ellipsis indicates where I assume that Swain or the typesetter jumped from one "who married" in the original manuscript to another, thereby eliding a section containing the name of Henry's wife, the name of the 6th son, George B. Clark and perhaps his wife, and the oldest daughter, Nancy who married Eli Bailey, and had a son named (this is where the quote picks back up) Jonathan Bailey.

The footnote then continues "Note by author: Some of the above sketch is erroneous as is shown by deeds in Mercer Co., W Va, viz, Dd Bk 1, p. 97, dated 1839, gives heirs of Joseph Clark, dec'd, as Rowland Dillion & Elizabeth his wife; Nancy Bailey (nee Nancy Clark, widow of Eli Bailey); John B. Clark; Carter Clark; Joseph M. Clark; Thomas R. Clark; James Luthers & Polly his wife; George B. Clark. Dd Bk 1, p. 172 transfers land from Rowland Dillion & Elizabeth, his wife, of Estill Co., Ky, and Joseph M. Clark of Scioto Co., Oh to Archibald Bailey. Dd Bk 2, p. 194 (dated 1845) transfers land from George B. Clark of Morgan Co., Ky to Nancy Bailey of Tazewell Co., Va."

If one assumes the ellision as I have done, the only discrepancies between the Swain account and the “correction” by Schreiner-Yantis are the name of Rowland Dillion's wife (Elizabeth vs Sally), Suthers vs Luthers as the surname of Polly's husband, R vs K as the middle initial of Thomas Clark, and that by 1840 Joseph M. was in Ohio rather than Tennessee, although he might have went to Tennessee first. On the Suthers/Luthers and K/R differences, it is Swain who is consistent with other records such as censuses and marriage books; Schreiner-Yantis must have misread the handwriting in the deed books.
