Notes for George Washington (“Wash”) Stamper
There were two George Washington Stampers in Morgan County, one born in 1818 and one born in 1810. Both married Nickell women, and both had daughters named Martha Jane. There was also a George Washington Stamper born June 1821 who lived in Lewis Co., with his wife Catherine Dyer.

The U.S. federal mortality schedule for Elliott Co., Ky records Geo. W. Stamper, age 70, married, born in and both parents born in Kentucky, farmer, died Feb 1880, cause of death sun stroke, length of residence in county 20 years. The cross-referenced family is #43, which is the family headed by the young widow Margaret Stamper.

The birth places for George do not match what he reported in earlier censuses, but they do match what was reported on his marriage record to Margaret. So apparently she believed that he and his parents were born in Kentucky.
Notes for Nancy Nickell
Several Nickell family trees say that Nancy died in 1868, perhaps based on a gravestone, although no cemetery name is given. If this is true, then she would not be the Nancy who is listed with George in the 1870 census.
Notes for George Washington (“Wash”) & Nancy (Family)
The family of George W. Stamper and Nancy Nickell is in this file because they are the great-great-great-grandparents of Wilma Davis, wife of Gary D. Lewis, and I imported a GEDCOM file of his (Gary is related to us in several ways, primarily Hall.)
Census
1850 census of Morgan Co., Ky, lists as family #42:
George W. Stamper, 32, b. N. Carolina; Nancy, 27, b. Ky; Martha, 12; Elizabeth, 9; Isabel, 7; John, 5; Sarah, 3, Isaac, 1. All children born in Kentucky.

1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, district 1, West Liberty P.O., enumerated 22 June, lists on p. 34 as family #211/209:
George W. Stamper, 42, farmer, b. N.C.; Nancy, 38; Martha Epperhart, 20; Elizabeth Stamper, 18; Isabella, 16; John W., 13; Isaac F., 10; Sarrah, 12; Samuel A., 6; Francis (f), 5; George M., 3; Ellen D., 2; French Epperhart, 7/12. All except George W. born in Ky.

1870 census of Elliott Co., Ky, precinct 1, Sandy Hook, enumerated 25 June, lists on p. 35 as family #209:
George W. Stamper, 51, farmer, b. NC; Nancy, 45; Sarah, 24; Samuel, 21; George, 14; Ellen, 11; Kidd, Angeline, 26, domestic servant. All except George W. born in Kentucky.

The next household is headed by George’s son John W. Stamper, listed as age 26 with wife Elizabeth age 23. The one after that is headed by George’s son Isaac Stamper, listed as age 23 with wife Elizabeth age 18, although based on earlier censuses John was probably 25 and Isaac 21.

The wife Nancy may not be the same one whom George was married to in the earlier censuses. His 1874 marriage record to Peggy Short says that one is his third marriage, and some Nickell family trees say that Nancy Nickell Stamper died in 1868.

The domestic servant Angeline Kidd may be the one who was the daughter of Edmund Kidd and Amanda Ramey. If so, she is redundantly recorded this census year in Rowan Co. with her parents, as age 30 (and she was really 32). The age is off by 6 years, but I cannot find any prior record of a different Angeline Kidd in the area.
