Notes for Mary Ann Pettit
The identification of Mary Ann Pettit who married John Elliott and John Crose with Samuel’s daughter Mary (age 18 in the 1850 census) is based partly on proximity (the Samuel Elliott family was next door to the Samuel Pettit family, and the Adam Crose family was very nearby), and partly on family tradition among the descendants of John Crose.

For example, Ruth (Crose) Workman, the eldest daughter of John's grandson Henry Crose, says that her grandparents Abraham and Martha Ann (Pettit) Crose both told her that they were first cousins, but that they didn't know it at the time that they married.

Another piece of evidence is provided by the following letter from Howard D. Crose:

"I got a call from a cousin in Salt Lick, Ky. tonight, her name is Beulah Black Razor and she lives at 9309 U.S.60 Salt Lick, Ky, phone 606-683-2914 she is the daughter of Samuel Black and Josephine Cassity, granddaughter of Thomas Cassity and Rebecca Crose (John A. Crose and Mary Elliott's daughter) anyway to make a long story short we were just talking about family ancestry (she is 90) and she mention that her great-grandmother Mary who was married to John A. Crose was a Pettit before she married a Mr. Elliott, and that she knew at one time Bluford Elliott (called him Uncle).

She related that her grandmother Rebecca Crose told her this. She said that the picture of John A Crose and Mary Pettit was lost in the flood of 39 and that her mother had it at that time."

Census
1860 census of Morgan Co., Ky, West Liberty precinct, enumerated 8 June, lists on p. 10 as family #58/56:
John Crose, 33, farmer; Mary A., 25; Bluford E., 5; Abraham, 2; Nancy J. Pettitt, 8.

Bluford and Nancy are both children of Mary and her first husband, John Elliott. I am not entering a middle initial E for Bluford since it may stand for Elliott. Nancy was legitimate, and was probably also the Nancy J. Elliott age 8 listed the same year with John Elliott’s parents. It may have been a mistake on the part of the enumerator to list her as a Pettit.

1870 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearce prec., dated 20 June, lists on page 13/128A, family #92 (between Jed Coggswell & John H. Sorrell) :
John Crose, 45; Mary, 35; Bluford, 16; Abram, 12; Rebecca, 10; Mary, 7. All born in Ky.

The 1880 census shows John age 54, Mary age 40, and a son Burnet age 7.
