Notes for John Elliott
Ray Flannery, who is a descendant of Bluford Elliott, wrote me that John went off on a trip one day when Bluford was a newborn and Nancy was about 2, and he never returned. Nobody knew what became of him, so they assumed him dead, and she remarried.

Morgan Co., Ky, death records, however, list John Elliott, age 26, farmer, died 10 Sep 1856 in Clark Co., Ky, cause of death “white swelling”, parents Saml S. & Francis Elliott, born in Morgan Co., residence Morgan Co. Yocum Creek, place of death Clark Co., Ky, reported by M. Banter, Dr.

If his death was recorded in 1856 in Morgan Co., and Mary remarried in 1857, also in Morgan Co., it would seem to me highly unlikely that she had not been informed of his death at the time it was recorded. But since it occurred in Clark Co., it is quite possible that he had spent a year or so in Clark Co. before he died, and that Mary did not find out where he had been until his death was reported.
Notes for Mary Ann Pettit
The identification of Mary Ann Pettit who married John Elliott and John Crose with Samuel’s daughter Mary (age 18 in the 1850 census) is based partly on proximity (the Samuel Elliott family was next door to the Samuel Pettit family, and the Adam Crose family was very nearby), and partly on family tradition among the descendants of John Crose.

For example, Ruth (Crose) Workman, the eldest daughter of John's grandson Henry Crose, says that her grandparents Abraham and Martha Ann (Pettit) Crose both told her that they were first cousins, but that they didn't know it at the time that they married.

Another piece of evidence is provided by the following letter from Howard D. Crose:

"I got a call from a cousin in Salt Lick, Ky. tonight, her name is Beulah Black Razor and she lives at 9309 U.S.60 Salt Lick, Ky, phone 606-683-2914 she is the daughter of Samuel Black and Josephine Cassity, granddaughter of Thomas Cassity and Rebecca Crose (John A. Crose and Mary Elliott's daughter) anyway to make a long story short we were just talking about family ancestry (she is 90) and she mention that her great-grandmother Mary who was married to John A. Crose was a Pettit before she married a Mr. Elliott, and that she knew at one time Bluford Elliott (called him Uncle).

She related that her grandmother Rebecca Crose told her this. She said that the picture of John A Crose and Mary Pettit was lost in the flood of 39 and that her mother had it at that time."
Notes for John & Mary Ann (Family)
No marriage record has been found for John Elliott and Mary Ann Pettit (I’ve checked Morgan and Carter counties), but the birth record of their daughter Nancy lists her parents as John Elliott and Mary A. Pettit. Furthermore, the birth record of Abraham Crose (see his notes) lists his parents as John A. Cross and Merry Ann Pettit, and John A. Crose’s marriage record lists his bride as “Mrs. Mary Ann Elliott, widow”.
