His obituary, printed in The Elkhart Truth of Wed., Jan 31, 1962, reported:

“Grant Pettit, 80, of 3027 Burr Oak Ave., died Tuesday afternoon in Elkhart General Hospital. He had been admitted Sunday.

Mr. Pettit’s first wife, Mary Thompson, died in 1915. He married Emma Hawkins in 1917. She died Feb. 22, 1961.

Surviving are four sons, Benjamin, Homer, Jess and Albert, all of Elkhart; three daughters, Mrs. Olin Swikert, Calif., Mrs. Lawrence Williams, Mishawaka, and Mrs. Roy Hawkins, Elkhart; a stepson, Henry Hawkins, Elkhart; 29 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 pm Thursday in the White Funeral Home. The Rev. Keith Finny, pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, will be in charge. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.”
