Notes for Ulysses Grant Pettit
His obituary, printed in The Elkhart Truth of Wed., Jan 31, 1962, reported:

“Grant Pettit, 80, of 3027 Burr Oak Ave., died Tuesday afternoon in Elkhart General Hospital. He had been admitted Sunday.

Mr. Pettit’s first wife, Mary Thompson, died in 1915. He married Emma Hawkins in 1917. She died Feb. 22, 1961.

Surviving are four sons, Benjamin, Homer, Jess and Albert, all of Elkhart; three daughters, Mrs. Olin Swikert, Calif., Mrs. Lawrence Williams, Mishawaka, and Mrs. Roy Hawkins, Elkhart; a stepson, Henry Hawkins, Elkhart; 29 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 pm Thursday in the White Funeral Home. The Rev. Keith Finny, pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, will be in charge. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery.”

Her obituary, printed in The Elkhart Truth of Wed., Feb 22, 1961, reported:

“Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Friday in the White Funeral Home for Mrs. Emma Pettit, 66, od 3027 Burr Oak, who died early today at General Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital Tuesday morning.

Mrs. Pettit was born on Nov. 10, 1894 in Bath County, Ky. After her first husband, Boone Hawkins, died, she was married to Grant Pettit, in 1917. He survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Homer and Benjamin Pettit and Henry Hawkins; two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Williams and Mrs. Olin Swikert of California; three stepchildren, Mrs. Roy Hawkins and Jess and Albert Pettit; a brother, Mart Goldy; three sisters, Mrs. Clarence Smith, Mrs. Elmer Gebhart and Mrs. Ralph Whiteside, and 28 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Thursday and until the time of service. Burial will be in Prairie Street cemetery. Mrs. Pettit was a member of the Mennonite church.”

The reported birthdate is off by one year. She was recorded as age 6 born Nov 1893 in the 1900 census, and her brother Boyd was born 18 Dec 1894.

Petitt, Grant, 48; Emma, wife, 24; Elbert, son, 18; Jesse, son, 17; May, dau, 15; Bertha, dau, 12; Henry, son, 9; Mary, dau, 6; Homer, son, 1 6/12; Virgil, son, 5/12.

Grant is listed as born Ind/Ohio/Ind, and all others as Ind/Ind/Ind, but it should be Kentucky for both Grant and Emma, and for all the children but Homer and Virgil. Also Grant should be only 41.

Elbert through Henry are sons of Grant by his first wife. Mary is a daughter of Emma and her first husband Boone Hawkins.

1930 census of Elkhart Co., Indiana, Concord township, enumerated 17 April, lists on p. 20A as family #521 at 1826 York Str. in Elkhart:
