Benjamin F. Pettit enlisted in the U.S. Army at Camp Perry Lacarne, Ohio, on 3 Mar 1943. Birth year 1923, residence Elkhart, Indiana, eucation grammar school, married. The database lists his height as 80 and his weight as 061, no units given, but that probably represents typos. (80 inches would be 6 feet 8 inches, and there is no indication that unusual height ran in the Pettit family. His weight may have been intended to be 161 lbs.)
His obituary reports:
BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. -- Benjamin F. Pettit, 81, of 8359 Harrison St. and formerly of Elkhart, died Sunday (March 7, 2004) at Miramar Lodge, Pass Christian.
He was born Feb. 17, 1923, in Elkhart to Grant and Emma (Hawkins) Pettit, now both deceased. He married Addie B. Smith, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Benjamin F. Pettit Jr., M.D., of Harbor Springs, Mich., and Patrick Pettit of Bay St. Louis; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Homer Pettit of Elkhart.
He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel, and three brothers, Jess, Elbert and Warren.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at Westbrook-Metz & Clouse Funeral Home. A 12:15 p.m. graveside service will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery.
Mr. Pettit retired from City Roofing Co. after a number of years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
