The Oregon death index lists Walker Quesinberry, died 13 Apr 1946 in Multnomah Co.

The [Portland] Oregonian of Sunday, April 14, 1946 had this report on his death:

Elderly Merchant Perishes As Flames Destroy Store

Multnomah county police Saturday were investigating the mysterious source of a fire which caused the death of Walker Quesinberry, 72, route 9, box 805, whose charred body was found sprawled on a bed in a rear room of his hardware store at Rockwood and Baseline roads, five miles east of the city limits.

The body of the elderly merchant was found by Troutdale, Vanport City and Errol Heights firemen, who found the one-story frame store engulfed in flames shortly after 4 A.M. Saturday.

When the fire, which caused damages of approximately $2000 to the premises, was under control, deputy sheriffs discovered a broken rear window and a 14-foot ladder propped against the rear of the building directly over the window.

$600 in Room

Deputy Sheriff Garth Stackhouse said Quesinberry slept in the bedroom at the rear of the hardward store which was one block east of the family residence occupied by his wife, Nancy, and a son, Frederick E. Quesinberry. The bedroom was gutted by the fire.

A possible source of the fire, deputy sheriffs reported, was a large light bulb apparently used by Quesinberry to heat a pad at the side of his bed. A light cord leading to the wall was charred, as was the pad covering the bulb.

Approximately $600 in bills was found in a number of cigar boxes in the room, although it was first suspected that robbery might be a motive for the fire.”

A follow-up article on April 17 reported that the fire and death were ruled accidental.
