Notes for Henry Clay “Pete” Smith
Pete is buried in Siloam (Carey) Cemetery, with his stone inscribed Pete Smith, Mar 3, 1872 - Apr 12, 1925, next to his first wife Martha.

His death certificate records Peat Smith, age 54 years 1 month 5 days, born 4 Mar 1871 in Elliott Co., died 12 Apr 1925 in Farmers, Rowan Co., farmer, married, father Mose Smith, mother’s maiden name Tilday Carter, both born in Ky, cause of death stomach cancer, informant Walter Smith, Farmers, Ky.

According to the marriage license to Elizabeth Elam, his parents were William and Delilah Smith, and he was 54 in 1924, suggesting a birthdate of about 1870.

I cannot find any match in the 1870 or 1880 censuses for either set of names. I suspect the “Tilday Carter” in his death certificate may be Walter entering his own mother’s maiden name (Pete’s first wife) rather than his grandmother’s.
