Notes for James L. Day
James is buried in Johnson Cemetery in Rowan Co., next to the graves of four Day children, listed only by initial and age at death, with no dates. They are K. age 3, E. age 2, C. age 10, and M.G. age 8. There are no other Day burials in the cemetery, at least, not marked.
Census Notes for James L. & Frances “Fannie” (Family)
1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Pearce precinct, enumerated 1 June, lists on p. 29:
Day, James L., 25, farmer; Fannie, 20, wife; Wm E., son, 2; Joe M., son, 9/12, b. Aug. All born Ky Ky Ky.

James is listed as a head of household, but there is no number next to his name. (The family number is supposed to be incremented for each head of household.) The preceding head of household is #258, Edmund Cassity age 27 with wife Mary age 21. The preceding dwelling number is #220/256, headed by Wm C. Brown age 32 with wife Margaret age 28. The family of Jackson Williams age 37 with wife Lydia age 35 is also listed under the same dwelling #220, as family #257. Four families seems like a lot to be in one dwelling; I suspect a recording error.

1900 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, enumerated 29 June, lists on p. 23B as family #442:
Day, James L., 50, born Jan 1850; Fannie, wife, 47, born May 1853, married 30 years, mother of 6 children, 6 living; Joe, son, 24, born March 1876; William, son, 22, born Jan 1878.

The ages are so inconsistent with the 1880 census and with later records that I suspect they were not given by the family. (Sometimes when enumerators could not visit the family they just entered their own guesses.)

I do not know where their daughters Myrtle and Maggie were living in 1900 (names and parentage from their marriage records.) Myrtle would have been about 12, and Maggie about 5. There was a Myrta Day age 16 b. Mar 1884 in Morgan Co with the family of Miles Caskey and his wife Alwida age 25, listed as sister-in-law, but according to the 1880 census Alwida was the daughter of Jackson and Elizabeth Day. There were also Luther A. Day age 8 and Maggie Day age 4 born Sep 1895 in Bath Co., as boarders with the family of James Lewis and his wife Mary J., but I know of no relationship between that Lewis family and James Day or Fannie Smedley. I can find no other matches.

1910 census of Rowan Co., Ky, district 1, enumerated 22 April, lists on p. 4B as family #70/74:
Day, Fannie, 49, widowed, mother of 9 children, 7 living, washerwoman; Maggie, dau, 15, single; Anna Cloy, 3, granddaughter. All born Ky Ky Ky.
