The best match I could find for Columbus Springer as a child in the U.S. Census at ancestry.com was the “Christopher C. Springer” in this record:
1850, Watertown township, Washington Co., Ohio, page 725, household 189/192:
Springer, Albert , 36, b. Ohio; Susanna, 37, b. Ky; Sarah, 8, b. Va; Christopher C., 7, b. Oh; George W. 5, b. Oh; Richard M., 2, b. Oh.

I could not find the above family, nor any other match for Columbus, in 1870. I did a nationwide search on Albert, Christopher, Columbus, George, and Richard. The closest possibility I could find was a Christopher and Leander Springer, both 16, as resident laborers with the family of John & Sarah Grundy in Wood County, Ohio. But considering that there is no match for Leander in Albert’s family in 1850, it is more likely that the family fell through the cracks and was just not enumerated.

1870 census of Rowan Co., Pine Grove district, lists on p. 132B as family #43:
Columbus Springer, 25, b. Ohio; Ruth, 24, b. Ky; John, 2, b. Ky.
