1860 census of Carroll Co., Virginia, Hillsville P.O., enumerated 20 July, lists on p. 39 as family #259/258:
John Duncan, 47, farmer; Lucy, 47, baker; Margaret Dalton, 3; Rachel Simpkins, 20, sewing; William, 14; Jackson, 11; Nancy, 9; Joshua, 22, farmer. All born in Virginia.

Margaret Dalton is Lucy’s niece, the daughter of her brother John. Joshua Simpkins is Rachel’s husband, as well as being John’s nephew. William through Nancy, incorrectly listed as Simpkins, are children of John and Lucy; the enumerator forgot to repeat the surname Duncan after entering their married daughter Rachel. (The more usual ordering would have been to put her at the end after her husband Joshua.)
