The Virginia deaths index lists Joshua Simpkins, age 52, died 5 April 1885 in Carroll Co., married, husband of Rachel Simpkins, parents Thomas & Margaret Simpkins.
The reported age at death would imply a birth date of late 1832 or early 1833, but he was recorded in the 1850 census as age 14 and the 1860 census as age 22.

Joshua and Rachel were first cousins, since Joshua’s mother was a sister of Rachel’s father.

William through Nancy are children of John and Lucy; the enumerator forgot to repeat the surname Duncan after entering Rachel. (The more usual ordering would have been to put her at the end after Joshua.)

The child count seems in conflict with other records, in particular, the 1870 and 1880 censuses suggest that a daughter Lucy died in that decade. The preceding household is headed by Isaac W. Duncan, who is married to Joshua and Rachel’s daughter Susan Ellen.
