Census
1900 census of Morgan Co., Ky, district 2, enumerated 23 June, lists on p. 20A as family #351/360:
Cox, Reuben, 64, b. Mar 1836, Va Va Va; Mary J., wife, 45, b. Feb 1855, Ky Ky Ky, married 16 years, mother of 0 children, 0 living; Lula, granddau, 4, b. June 1895; Lawson, Cora A., stepdau, 15, b. Mar 1885; Curtis B., stepson, 12, b. Aug 1887; Mays, Robert L., lodger, 25, b. Oct 1874, widowed. All except Reuben born Ky Ky Ky.

The number of children for Mary, and the number of years married, are incorrect. Mary has apparently interpreted the number of years married to be the number of years since her first marriage (to James Lawson in 1884), and the number of children as the number from only the current marriage, which is the opposite of the way the questions were intended to be answered.

Robert L. Mays was married on 13 Nov 1894 to Reuben’s daughter Cynthia, who died in 1898. Lula is probably their daughter, although it is curious that she is recorded with the surname Cox in both 1900 and 1910. (See Robert’s 1910 census notes.)

The next household is that of Reuben’s son James Franklin Cox.
