My only connection to this family is very remote, that their granddaughter Gladys Devore (living with them in the 1900 census) married Floyd David Pettit, my first cousin three times removed. I initially traced them back just to get verification of Linnie’s birth place, and confirmation that Devore was her maiden name rather than the name of a husband. But a descendant of their grandson Clarence Lands (Gladys’s half brother) contacted me asking for more information about Clarence’s ancestors, so I filled out the rest of the family group sheet for Jesse and Mary.
Census
1870 census of Hocking Co., Ohio, Green township, enumerated 18 June, lists on p. 6 as family #41:
Devore, Jesse, 23, works at charcoal, b. Ohio; Mary M., 21, b. Ohio, married in Feb of the current year; Harriet, 62, b. Pa, infirm lives with son.
The previous household is headed by Andrew Devore age 26, presumably Jesse’s brother, and the next household is Jesse M. Rollins age 29 with wife Lasetta M., age 32, apparently Jesse’s sister, judging by the nephew John in the 1880 census. Children in the Rollins household are John W., 3; Sarah M., 2; Mary M., 8/12; and Eliza A. Devore, age 5.
