Notes for Edward Fielding Clarke
The U.S. Army Register of Enlistments 1798-1914 records Edward F. Clarke, age 28 1/2, born in Rowan Co., Ky, enlisted 29 April 1901 in Ironton, Ohio, occupation lawyer, discharged June 14, 1901.

Herringshaw’s Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century, Chicago, Ill, 1901, contains on p. 222 the paragraph “CLARKE, EDWARD FIELDING, lawyer, was born March 19, 1873 in Morehead, Ky. He studied law in his father’s office; was admitted to the bar in 1894, and practices his profession in his native city.”

His WW I draft registration card, filed 12 Sep 1918, records Edward Fielding Clark, age 45, residence 605 E. College St., Florence, Alabama, born 19 Mar 1873, occupation police, employer Air Nitrate Corp, Musels Shoal, Alabama, nearest relative Mary E. Clark, same address.

(This would be his fourth wife, Mary Emma Machin, with whom he was enumerated in Texas in the 1920 census.)

The California death index lists Edward Fielding Clarke, born 19 Mar 1873 in Kentucky, died 24 Apr 1948 in San Diego Co., father’s surname Clarke, mother’s maiden name Goodan.

Census Notes for Edward Fielding & Mary Emma (Family)
1920 census of Wichita Co., Texas, Justice precinct, Wichita Falls town, enumerated 27 Jan, lists on p. 16B as family #255/311, at 305 Walnut St:
Clark, Edward F., 46, b. Ky Ky Ky, lawyer & abstractor at court house; Mary E., wife, 43, b. England England England; Edward F. Jr., son, 4 2/12, b. Texas Ky Ky; Brand, George P., stepson, 11; Joseph W., stepson, 9; Mary V., stepdau, 7. All stepchildren born Penn WVa England.

(Note that if the mother’s birthplace for Edward Jr. being Ky is correct, it would imply that he is not Mary Emma’s son. But the 1930 census differs, see below.)

1930 census of Wichita Co., Texas, Wichita Falls Jalonic addition, block 22, enumerated 5 Apr, lists on p. 11A as family #171/191, at 1405 Grant St:
Brand, Mary E., 54, widowed, age at first marriage 29, b. England England England; George P., son, 22; Milton J., son, 20; Mary V., dau, 18. All Brand children born Penn WVa England; Clark, Edward F., son, 10, b. Texas WVa England.

There is a large discrepancy in the age for Edward between the 1920 census, which suggested a birthdate of about Oct or Nov 1915, and this one, which suggests a birthdate in late 1919 or early 1920. (Also the parent birthplaces are different.) Either at least one of the censuses has his age wrong, or else there were two Edward Clarke Jrs born in Texas, one of which died before the other was born and te name was reused, which would be somewhat unusual.
